Who's Who

I don’t mind admitting that I had been looking forward to this tribute night at Plinston more than any other so far this year. There’s a special excitement about re-living the sounds of one’s formative musical years. This particular show threatened to visit upon me all manner of teenage memories. No doubt some of them would be best left undisturbed, but all the same this was to be a journey on which I would be a very willing passenger even if I had to hold on very tight at times.
Who’s Who are widely acknowledged to be Britain’s foremost (and probably busiest) tribute to the Daltrey, Townshend, Moon and Entwhistle legacy and in a fitting nod to those earliest times, opened up in front of a capacity house with one of their greatest: Substitute complete with the trademark Daltrey microphone – whirling!
More echoes of the past came thundering down the decades with Can’t Explain and Pictures of Lily but my personal favourite from the opening quartet was “I Can see for Miles” which was so true to the original I could almost taste it!
Moving on into the Quadraphenia offering, I especially liked “Can you see the Real Me?” and “I’m One”, the latter having a Jagger-esque quality about it.
This crowd was really lapping up a stage performance of power, passion and precision and just when I thought the tempo would have to drop we were served up with “Inside Outside”, a rock n’ roll inspired number which saw drummer Paul (‘Moonie’) Kemp raise his incredible energy output to such a level I swear he could have supported the National Grid!
More terrific tracks followed with the outstanding ‘Drowned” and “Love Reign” deserving a mention.
“Pinball Wizard” was quickly followed by “See Me, Hear Me” taking the worn-out audience from the ‘energized’ to the ‘apoplectic’ and back again. Someone in the crowd turned and said they would soon be needing a rub-down with the Kerrang magazine.
The Magic Medley which closed the show was just that – magic, culminating in “Won’t Get Fooled Again” with its keyboard atmospherics making monster mileage out of this most recognizable Who anthem.
A superb night and judging by the feedback I overheard, another helping should appear on the Plinston Live menu soon. Full and satisfied though this audience obviously was, I don’t think they will be long in getting their appetite back!
