Mad About the Musicals

There was more than a touch of class in evidence at Plinston on 10th September 2006, for the opening of a new season of shows.
Making a third visit to the venue, with an all-new offering, following two massively popular concerts in 2004 and 2005, Mad About Productions ensured that the magic of the West End again proved its irresistible allure to a sizeable and highly appreciative crowd.
With tremendous vocal ability and aplomb, plus personality to match, the cast of five, led by Director Michael Courtney, made this show a sheer delight from sentimental start to pulsating finish.
The first set, at a little over the hour, positively raced by with unforgettable classics such as the beautiful girl duo song The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow; Lionel Barts’ As Long As He Needs Me and my personal favourite Music Of The Night from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom Of The Opera.
After the break, a super little medley from Chicago lit up the stage and Michael’s much loved and syrupy classic Love Changes Everything from Aspects of Love was a real winner.
You could have picked many highlights from a well-balanced second period which oozed quality, but my own favourites were I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables and the poignant melody I Still Believe from Miss Saigon, a musical I’ve always wanted to see but never quite managed to.
Light relief came in the shape of the naughty-but-nice Everybody’s Girl which paved the way nicely for a high octane Queen-inspired finale from We Will Rock You and an up-tempo little offering from Mama Mia climaxed by the trademark Abba song Dancing Queen.
All-in-all, faultless professionalism and a great evening’s entertainment for all fans of the Musicals – probably this company’s best yet.
